Following an alternator failure, I was debating on having my old one rebuilt vs. upgrading to this new alternator. I opted for this new one a few months ago, and I have been very satisfied so far. Its performance has been good and its power output has been stable. I would definitely recommend this upgrade to anyone looking to increase their power systems reliability.

This alternator replaced in the order a refurbished that really didn’t exist. When it came, my mechanic had difficulty finding the adapter parts. They were encased in foam that filled the box. Eventually, he broke apart, the blob of foam and found them and was able to install it. As far as I know This is a good alternator

I have never had a problem with a ford alternator. These plane power ones seem to not last, have way more issues and was putting out a 16 volt spike every 3-5 minutes . You would think the regulator would stop that, but two different volt meters on my plane kept saying that high voltage. I swapped regulators and it did the same thing. I replaced the alternator and it mostly cleared up but still seems to jump around between 14.0- 14.2 and today got to 14.3 for a few seconds and I thought it was doing the same thing with a new alternator, regulator, mostly new wires etc.

Seems to provide output at t lower RPM than the original (Ford, I believe) alternator. The same previous alternators slight whine in the headset is gone.
Has been on the aircraft over a year now, and is still doing great. Is on a towplane that has probably had at least 200 stop-starts in the pat year.

Did some research before accepting my A&P recommendation for a rebuilt OEM alternator for my Piper Arrow III. The reviews said a new Plane Power alternator was the better option. My A&P had no objection. But the lower price for a new Plane Power alternator closed the deal. New? Lighter? Better low speed amps? AND less expensive? Don’t see that in general aviation much.

Easy install and worked great on an O-320 H2AD except the old belt, the correct part number for that plane, was just barely long enough as the pulley on the Plane Power alternator is a bit bigger. Manufacturer was puzzled by this. The only solution appears to be a slightly longer belt but dont know if one is available that is PMAd.

Installed on my D model Piper 180. Swapped the bracket out with the one that comes with the kit, AL12-C60, and it went on very easily. I wish I had bought a new adjustable bracket arm they sell for $40. Volts right up there at 14.1 / 14.2. The alternator I had was at 13.8. Kept the old regulator and OV relay for now.

I recently replaced my Prestolite ALY-8420 in my 1978 Mooney M20J with the Plane Power AL12-P70 and I am very happy with it. The voltage pegs right at 13.7-13.8 volts DC during all phases of engine operation. Seems to work great and was an easy replacement. I even shaved 2 pounds off my weight and balance by switching to this alternator!

The alternator was great! Nice and compact. Lighter than the old one and came in with all the hardware to install it. The only thing missing here was the installation instructions since the hardware that came in is different from the one that you take out of the engine. I had to google it in order to get the installation instructions.

High quality manufacture. Documentation is sketchy and needs improvement. Weighs only a few ounces less than the 50-year old Prestolite 6406 it replaced. In inferred from the description that the Plane Power would be lighter.

Hartzell Plane-Power Alternator 24V/60A - New - AL24-F60
June 22, 2023
Great alternator! Unfortunately Spruce does a poor job of detailing or describing what exactly comes in the package and their Reference Chart is wrong. There is a generic stock photo showing a PlanePower alternator and some hardware but it is the same picture for every single alternator they sell. Which leaves you wondering if this will fit your application.
I first ordered an AL24-F60 (which I now know, is a kit that includes the installation hardware and a 10-5050-1 alternator, but what I got was a 10-5050-1 (bare alternator)
Its an alternate part number...
Im not necessarily blaming Spruce. There may have been some confusion between our parts guy and Spruce, but what I got (10-5050-1) was a bare alternator with no bolts, brackets or bushings. After a while on the phone with Hartzell (PlanePower) we determined that I did if fact have the right alternator but I needed the attaching hardware. In case youre wondering, I could not use the old hardware because there wasnt any (It was going on a new engine and the old engine was a different model.) So at this point it seems pretty easy, Right? Nope. You cant just buy the attaching hardware separately. You must buy a new alternator with the attaching hardware kit. So I get on the Spruce website and is says that for a 172N I need an AL24-F60. Thats what I said the first time! But then I notice that it says Bracket not included So I scroll down until I find a 24 volt one with the bracket for an O-320 it says I need an AL24-70 so thats what I order. It shows up. Nope wrong one again. It has attaching hardware, but not the correct hardware. So I get on the phone with Hartzell again and they say Yup looks like you need an AL24-F60. Palm Face Emoji. So we call up Spruce and after a long runaround I get customer relations and I say Can you go back there and get an AL24-F60 off the shelf and send me a picture of whats in the box? At this point I had the drawing from Hartzell detailing every part of the installation. The guy at Spruce tells me that the AL24-F60 is in fact what I need and it does in fact come with the installation hardware, but he says I will need to buy the correct tensioner arm separately because it isnt included in the kit Thankfully they sell that separately!
I say OK go ahead and expedite shipping on both of those. Thanks.
It shows up and what do I get? Exactly what I needed plus an extra tensioner arm because the one that isnt included in the kit is actually included in the kit...So why such a long-winded story about my Alternator Diaries? Thats good question. Not really trying to beat up PlanePower. Just trying to disseminate information that might save someone else from paying their mechanic for countless hours on the phone and keep them from buying two extra alternators that they need to figure out how to return or keep or something.
BTW, If you are installing an alternator on a C-172N with an O-320-D2J, The part you are looking for is an AL24-F60. I could have had this plane done a week sooner!

I would have given this a 5 Star Review,,, BUT the through Bolt came from the factor non-threaded.... as it missed a machining step. The alternator does supply power at the low end much better that the previous Kelly unit. If not for the bolt issue, installation would have been really fast, even in a Mooney!
If you look at the picture depicted there ARE THREADS on the bolt. Makes me very concerned about their quality control.

December 27, 2017
For my 1980 172N, this did NOT fit properly with the existing stock size belt. The mounting brackets had to be slightly modified to allow enough space for the belt to slip over the pulley. Also the picture shows a new bolt and nut for hardware thats supposedly included, that did not come with the kit either. What should have been a one hour job turned into an entire days work. Not impressed.
