Easy install, very bright, low current. TOO BRIGHT, in fact, at night when the flashes reflected on my low wings and became a distraction in the cockpit. Covering the forward 180° with 70% absorbing LED dimming sheet, stuck to the inside of the lens, helped. Certainly not an ideal solution. No sync line on that model, so installing a second beacon on the underbelly is not an option. All-in-all I am satisfied, but there is room for improvement.

I purchased two of these to replace Whelen 70509 flashers on my Cessna 140. I have a 14V system and a generator and needed to reduce the amp load to mitigate battery drainage during low RPM operations. The average amp draw on the LEDs is over 60% less than the halogen lights! The OR36RIN is all aluminum base and housing. The assembly is well sealed and much better construction than the 70509s. Light is very bright! I talked to the Whelen factory and they advised me to drill a 1/8 hole in the center of the cover of the light that was to be mounted on the bottom of the fuselage (take the cover off before you do this). I also added a rubberized cork seal between the base of the unit and the fuselage. Price is high, but highly recommended!

Looks good works great. Very bright for daytime visibility for other aircraft and to avoid birds. I have noticed birds getting out of my way more after installing this beacon. If flying at night a piece of aluminum tape might be needed on the front side as it really lights up the baggage area in my C150. In my experience Whelen products do not produce radio noise when properly installed and there is no radio noise from this beacon either.

There are two things you can count on any Whelen products: they are good and extremely overpriced. Since our need to replace the old, broken and heavy coffee grinder was immediate, we pulled the trigger on this unit. Its very easy to install and you dont need to wait until its dark to appreciate its brightness. We can spot our both C-150s beacons on the ground all the way across the airport or anywhere in the pattern during broad daylight.

This LED style flash beacon replaced an old flash tube style that utilized a power supply. The power supply was failing to produce sufficient power to operate the flash tube. The increase in visibility of the aircraft is greatly improved with the LED Orion 360 and the need for a power supply has been eliminated.

My only reason for giving this product 4 stars, is because of the paucity of information when it comes to installation. While its very straight forward, this beacon is supposed to work in conjunction with the A440 adapter plate when replacing legacy Grimes rotating beacons with a five hold mounting patttern, but when the beacon is put in this adapter, there is about a 1/16 gap all the way around, between the vertical aspect of the adapter and the side of the beacon. Its a 1/8 discrepacy between the two diameters. I can only assume, that this gap is to be filled with some sort of fuselage sealant. If not water would enter inside of the plane through this void. The three screws holding the beacon into the adapter can deform the adapter if made too tight. I got around this by placing a 1/16 c.s. o-ring between the beacon and adapter to tighten down the screws without deforming anything, and then sealed above that o-ring with sealant. No where was this called out in the installation instructions--not with the beacon and not with the adapter.

Great looking strobe to replace the Grimes that wasn’t rotating anymore. The fit in the rudder cap was pretty good, but left a slight gap around the radius of the fixture. Installing was easy.

This was a replacement fir a mid-80’s Whelen strobe that had finally failed. Installation was simple and straightforward, aside from accessing the fasteners inside the aircraft. The three threaded mounting holes on the light housing did not line up to the original light holes. Two were perfect, but the 3rd was off by 15 degrees. This meant drilling a new hole in the base to line up with the 3rd threaded hole on the light. While not necessarily a problem with this light, the Whelen to Whelen compatibility issue was surprising. Please note that this light does require a base in usable condition, as it slides inside an existing base and a new one is not provided. Once operating, the LEFs are daylight-visible and the entire unit looks great!
