Available in both grey and black, balloon rubber is the most resilient and shock absorbing tread material available.
As good as expected
I was reluctant to purchase this wheel but the quality seems much better than reviews I have read. Bearings fit well, bolt hole is concentric with the wheel etc. It is well made and performing very well so far.
I use the R&K 4x1.5 x 5/8 on my Midget Mustang which lands kinda fast.and so far had 3 1/2 years good service (about 350 hours) from the my initial cheapie tool-cart wheel...BUT....I first packed the inside of the wheel and bearings (yes, they are open to accept grease on the inside portion) with high pressure rating 50% moly grease. If you do that right away they just might last forever, or until the rubber goes. However if you want to make it a really nicely rolling unit, press out the old clunker bearings and press in a pair of Enduro 202FFLB truly-sealed bearings. Theyre about $17 depending on where you shop. I did that to my just-in-case-spare wheel, but the first is still going strong.
Use these on a PANZL S330 Aerobatic Monoplane. Tailwheel lasts around 75 landings before showing appreciable wear. Around 150 landings its either worn off half the rubber or it has splits in the sidewalls. For the cost, I carry one as a spare when I travel and keep one on the shelf. The Panzl doesnt carry the tail-weight of the Pitts but does have similar touchdown speeds. For the money, they are just fine.
The 4 x 1-1/2 wheel is actually 1-3/4 wide at the hub with bearing. Had to narrow the wheel (belt sander) to fit my 1-1/2 tailwheel yoke.
Be careful, some of these have 1 RS bearings (seal on one side only) and some have 2 RS (fully sealed). The 1 RS bearings are not packed in grease and are not indicated other than markings on the seal. These should be manually packed. The 2 RS cannot be packed and there is no need to.
These wheels are ‘way’ out of round. I bought 2 and they both have the same identical issue. When you put them on an axle and spin the wheel, it looks like a record on a turntable that’s missing the centering pin. They look good and feel good, and are very heavy duty…just not designed for any speeds over 8 miles an hour. The factory says they are designed for heavy duty dolly’s and carts moving slowly across a shop or warehouse floor. I wouldn’t recommend them for any type of aircraft use. Unfortunately, I will be returning these ASAP.
The manufacturer recommends max 225 pound operating load rating. Seemed fine until I got about 25 landings on it. Became very noisy. Realized the bearings were dry/ no grease! And no way to grease into the bearing. This was the wrong product for me with a solid axle mounting the 4 wheel. If they had pre-lubricated bearings they would be fine.
Less than 150 landings/75 hours on mine (6x2212x 1/2) balloon tire and it delaminated off the rim..... wobbles and spins freely relative to the hub. Maybe I got a lemon, but maybe not. Purchased something different to replace this with.
USE CAUTION! This wheel/tire assembly is used on my S2B Pitts. My existing R&K wheel threw its tread. R&K Industrial told me that the rubber tire portion is glued to the aluminum hub and is NOT intended for use at the rotational speeds resulting from aircraft tail wheel use. The replacement R&K wheel/tire assembly purchased from ACS arrived (new out of the box) in an UNUSABLE condition. The bearing hole bored in the hub was a full 1/8 off of center. This resulted in an assembly which was badly out of round and definitely not usable as a tail wheel. After speaking with the R&K Industrial people at length, it is very clear that QC is NOT high on their priority list as these wheels (so I was informed) are intended for use as ground castors. Now if that story isnt bad enough, here is the bad part. The time and cost of shipping this wheel back and forth to ACS exceeds its cost

Correct, these bearings are sealed and already inserted ao there is no lubricant required.
This is a rubber tire, 65-70A duro.
The inside diameter of t he 06-03500 bearing is .625".
