Awesome and well built. A tad uncertain as to how well the lock mechanism will hold, it doesn’t seem to lock up as tightly as expected, so I’m holding off on giving them 5 stars... but to be honest, they are holding well so far and I’ve had them on through 3 days of winds gusting in the 40 range.

So glad to have this after installing G5s, regular control lock doesnt fit. Not 5 stars since it came with the strap 90 degrees off, and had to be popped open and snapped back with great difficulty. I got it off and took to my young mechanic to get it snapped back together.

Agree with the other comments, and would add that the lock has a tendency to come off in rain/mist. I do have fabric control surfaces, though, which makes things more slippery. With that all said, I am reordering 2 new ones right now after the last 2 broke because of wear. Those lasted me two years.

I have found these gust locks do the job as advertised. I had heard of them becoming loose in windy conditions but I have never experienced this and mine have held in some terrible conditions. Like Robert I am disappointed in the life of the straps, they just fell to pieces. Being in Australia I try to purchase all my supplies from one place to keep the shipping charges down but I see A/Spruce do not stock the replacement straps for these locks, disappointing!!!

They hold the rudder securely, even in very windy conditions. However: tightening the strap to secure it onto the aircraft after flight is often a bit fiddly (it is hard to get the length between the halves just right while securing it). Removing it for flight is a breeze though. But mine lasted less than a year before the strap literally disintegrated in the sun, and I found the two halves lying on the ground with the strap broken. Granted, Hawaiis tropical heat and salt air is hard on everything, but other places also have harsh conditions, and you wouldnt use something like this on an aircraft thats hangared. For something costing more than $30, it should last a couple of years. I have other things with straps (like tiedowns), whose straps lasted in the same conditions for over a decade. I gave it 3 stars because, while it lasted, it was really effective.

I have one of these gust locks for my RV-7. I found that it does not grip the strap well. I threaded the strap thru the unit in different manners, there are only about 3 ways the strap can be installed. Not sure what the manufacturers intent is, I found one way that worked the best. That word being relative. The over-centering camlike lever has no teeth in it to grip the strap. The end result is like Dod F and Jeremiah have stated: The lock loses it grip. I spend about 3-5 minutes getting the gust lock installed, trying to get it tight, what should take 1 minute. I really cant see how they would have designed this unit without teeth, or a better cam to grab the strap better. The rest of the unit seems to be of high quality, hopefully the mfg reads customer reviews and goes back and redesigns the unit.

These are good for light use applications. Once you figure out how to take all slack out they clamp like nothing else. However, in our application with a large membership and multiple flights this has proven to not be made for heavier use. We purchased 3 of these for 3 different C-152's (rudder applications)and all have failed within a year. Total use between the 3 aircraft was about 650 hours. The plastic clamps have broken and the webbing, as stated, breaks down quickly. Not saying that it's a bad product. I just would not recommend this item for heavier use.

I would give this lock 5 stars if the fabric was stronger. It rots and brakes in just a few months when used in the weather and sun.

I own a Mooney. It works ok for the elevator but doesnt work for the elevator as it doesnt have a good flat surface on both sides. The shape of the wingtip and the V angle of the elevator both work against the products design. Even on the elevator where the design works better, the straps are ok but not great. Theyre good for a weekend somewhere but not if youre regularly parked outside.

Using this as a rudder gust lock on a 172SP and very disappointed with the gust locks strap. The strap shears very easily due to friction, and weve had to replace it twice in four months, the most recent replacement happened in just one week. This gust lock does not stand up to windy and gusty conditions. Time to find something else.

The strap is hard to thread through the clamping system.

Cessna 172N has had some storms come through and noticed that the contraption would back off in high wind. it needs to have a longer base as well to rest on the surface. The small base still allows for movement. I wound up making my own out of 2X4, carpet and all thread bolt and nut. Solid as a rock now.

Does not last under the sun. 2 of the three broke after a year. The strap are difficult to hold. Don’t trust this system to protect your aicraft.

Returning it. Will not cinch down tight enough to hold control surface in place.

Extrememly difficult and time consuming to get enough strap tension between the halves for device to keep flight control surface even partially immobile (I tried on ailerons/rudder/elevator on my 172). This is a cheesy little thing. It says to slide the strap between the control surface and the fixed surface. scuse me but there is a hinge at each end and I cant slide it in. If I take the thing apart to push the strap through, its a nightmare to get through and put back in the cam lock. Couldnt use it on my 152 Rudder or elevator. I could slide the strap between the aileron and flap to hold there, but its a tapered surface and it just slides off. Unusable for my application and IMHO not quality built.

they are very difficult to get a firm lock with the way the strap pulls through the locking latch. the straps also completely disintegrated in less then a year with my aircraft tied down out side.

Lock looks nice and the padding seems good quality. Unfortunately the strap mechanism is useless and can easily be undone by pulling the pads apart. I put it on the elevator and thought that was pretty handy until I tried moving the elevator gently which caused the strap to loosen. I tried a second and the effect was the same. There does appear to regions of the strap which hold the mechanism tight. But to be able to gently pull the locks and have the strap slip is poor design.

Really does not fit/work for my Cessna 414. Its really too small for my massive rudder. Im going to try heating/melting it to be able to make it fit better.

These look cool, but they will not stay secure. They will not stay on the control surfaces during wind. I had a gusting 15 knot wind. The control surfaces were “secured” with this product. The elevator , rudder, and ailerons were all loose. The elevator “air gizmo” was laying on the ground. Evidently the elevator banged around enough in the wind that it damaged the autopilot pitch control servo. Post takeoff when the autopilot was armed , it pointed the plane directly at the ground. It was a fun recovery. I would recommend that anyone that has these, discontinue use immediately. Find a secure way to lock your controls.
