Overview

The Pro Pilot is a two axis autopilot designed for precise navigation and altitude control. It encompasses all of the performance and safety features of our other systems, and makes them available in a single, panel mounted instrument.

Fuel Management and Auto Trim, included in price.

For Experimental and LSA Aircraft Only.

The system includes back-lighted buttons and illuminated faceplate nomenclature as part of a pleasing new industrial design. The Pro Pilot provides excellent horizontal navigation capabilities and the vertical navigation provides altitude control, climb/descent functions with airspeed limiting, and altitude pre-select. Climb/descent on airspeed is also included. The Pro Pilot uses Trio's proven "intelligent" Gold Standard servos to assure safe and reliable control actuation. While the Pro Pilot incorporates many features, it is very simple to operate. Just press the H NAV button and it will track your flight plan. Press the V NAV button and it will hold your current altitude. Separate MODE buttons are provided for advanced Horizontal and Vertical functions. The H MODE button allows the pilot to track a GPS flight plan, fly a specific course over the ground, or intercept a flight plan. The V MODE button may be used to specify a minor altitude adjustment, a climb/descent rate, and/or a destination altitude.

GPSS/GPSV Option

GPSS (GPS Steering):
This option might be desired if your GPS receiver or EFIS system provides GPSS commands, usually via an ARINC 429 data output. In this case, the Pro Pilot will no longer rely upon its own navigation functions, but will follow the roll commands coming from the GPS or EFIS for guidance.

(Note: If you will be using a handheld GPS to provide signals to the autopilot, it does not have ARINC 429 outputs available)

GPSV (GPS Vertical Steering):
With WAAS approaches coming into widespread use, it is now possible to do precision approaches using approved GPS systems. The GPSV option allows the Pro Pilot to follow the pitch steering commands that are provided by an approved panel mounted WAAS GPS receiver or EFIS system for descents into an airport. The GPSV option requires that the GPSS option is also installed.

The GPSV feature also allows the autopilot to follow the vertical bug on a compatible EFIS system.

Note: Trio has combined the GPSS and GPSV functions to interface with the increased number of EFIS systems and approach certified receivers. We now offer only the combined GPSS/GPSV option.

Reviews

FWIW, I had issues with my Trio EZ-Pilot once I finally started flying my RV. The autopilot was WAY out of warranty and had never been used, but the response from Trio and the help I received to repair my issues was nothing short of perfect. It is unfortunate there are negative reviews here because my experience could not have been better! And now everything works as expected.

Had my Trio Pro pilot Autopilot installed about a year ago in my C182, coupled to Garmin 430W GPS. Works as advertised. Very happy.

It looks like a good product. STC Group won’t answer questions or return calls. I called 3times with message, no call back. Sad to see companies fail due to customer service.

It seems to be a great product but customer support is zero. A product this complex without support is a very expensive paperweight. I have tried three times to get installation questions answered and have yet to get one reply. As great a product as this seems to be, I would suggest choosing another company who supports their products.

Two months ago I upgraded my R182RGs autopilot from a 1990s S-Tec 50 that was acting up. The V-Nav function works, but the H-Nav does not. My airplane has been in & out of the shop 6 times for gain adjustments, but it still wont track to my GTN750. First it rolled left. Adjust gain. Then it rolled right. Adjust gain. Then it wandered back & forth, 20 degrees L, 20 degrees R. Adjust gain. Now it rolls 30 degrees R (I let it go and finally turned it off after a 360 degree R turn. Once the shop removed a small broken white plastic gear. This is really frustrating and Im about to seek a return to Trio...

Q: What comes in the box for the Trio Pro Pilot?

In the box is control head, two servos, connector kits and servo mounting (for RV aircraft only). Harness not included but can be bought separately. Make sure you put your aircraft make and model on your order.

Q: If I purchase the Trio Pro Pilot with servo mounting for AN RV 7 will it come with the two brackets for pitch and roll?

Per the manufacturer, the Trio Pro Pilot does come with the pitch bracket. The roll bracket for an RV 7 is not included and cost an extra 45 dollars.

Q: Can the Trio Pro Pilot Autopilot servo arm be moved 180 degrees pointing away from base?

Per the manufacturer, The servo crank arm is not mounted to the servo when shipped so it can be installed in any orientation, in 45 degree increments.

Q: Does this unit require input from an ADI or T&B for attitude or rate sensing or is it a stand alone unit that uses an AHRS type sensor?

For attitude information you would need to interface a portable or panel mount aviation GPS.

Q: Will this Trio Pro Pilot interface with a slaved NSD-360 with bootstrap for heading command and approach functions?

The Trio autopilot, which is a non certified autopilot is not designed to interface with any certified autopilot system such as the NSD-360.

Q: I have your Pro pilot installed in my RV6a and connected to a Bendix King SkyMap111C. Will my pro pilot track a flight plan in a Garmin 795/796 or aera 550/560? Thank you, David Norman.

Yes, the Pro Pilot is compatible with the Garmin Aera 500 and 700 series GPS. You will need the Aera power/data cable to connect with your auto pilot.

Q: When the Trio Pro Pilot is not controlling roll or pitch, can I use it as a turn coordinator?

Yes. There is a display on the autopilot that does show a turn coordinator. It is available to the pilot at all times, when the autopilot is turned on (engaged or not).

Q: Will the Trio pro pilot autopilot track a flight plan on a Garmin 496?

Yes via the 496 power data cable part number 11-02694.

Q: I will be installing this with a GTN 650. Do I need the GPSS/GPSV option? Why?

You will need the GPSS/GPSV to capture vertical glide slope for instrument approaches.

Q: Can this autopilot be used with the Garmin G5 and GTN 650? If so, will it be able to fly precision approaches?

As of right now, the Trio is not on the approved autopilot list, and therefore we cannot confirm that it will work.
